Shawl Weaving Artisan - Designs by Using CAD

Weaving plan design fabrics on CAD

Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
            • create, color, and visualize basic fabric weave structures (like plain, twill, satin, etc.) on Photoshop, simulating
the woven texture and weave plan
            • create a plain weave design (interlacement plan) and convert it into a textile repeat pattern using CorelDraw
            • draw, color, and develop basic weaving plan (e.g., Plain Weave) using Paint Shop Pro (PSP) software.

              Requirements

               Tools/Equipment’s/Instruments
Computer system with CAD software e.g • Paint shop pro
               • Photoshop • Graph Paper or sample fabric
               • CorelDraw (for reference) - as reqd.

            PROCEDURE

TASK 1: Process for weave design in Photoshop
Step 1 • Use Pencil Tool with 100% hard edges for pixel-

            1 Open Photoshop. accurate fills.
2 Go to: File → New. • Zoom in (Ctrl + +) to work on details.
                                                                  Example
3 Set canvas size (Example: 1000×1000 pixels for a
small draft). For 2/2 Twill, fill cells diagonally as per draft.

Use higher resolution (300 DPI) if you want to Step 5
               print. 1 Simulate fabric texture
Step 2 • Select the small draft you created.

1 Enable grid lines • Go to Edit → Define Pattern → Name your weave
Go to: View → Show → Grid. pattern (e.g., “2/2 Twill”).
2 Snap elements to grid for alignment • Create a new large canvas (for fabric
                                                                       visualization).
View → Snap to → Grid • Go to Edit → Fill → Pattern → Select your saved
3 Change Grid size (Optional for finer control) pattern. This will fill the area with a repeated
Go to: Edit → Preferences → Guides, Grid & Slices woven texture.
→ Gridline Every: 10 px, Subdivisions: 1 (or adjust as Step 6
            needed). 1 Add Yarn Colors
Step 3 • Select warp cells and fill with one color.
1 Create the Weave Draft Grid (Design Cell Matrix) • Select weft cells and fill with another color.
               • Use the Rectangle Tool (U) or Pencil Tool (B). • Use Magic Wand Tool (W) to select similar color
               • Draw small square blocks to represent each cell areas quickly.
                  (1 warp x 1 weft intersection). Step 7
               • For a Plain weave (2×2 grid): 1 Label Your Design
               • Make a 2x2 square matrix. • Use the Text Tool (T).
               • For larger drafts (like 8×8), make 8 rows and 8
columns. • Label the weave type, draft number, ends per
inch (EPI), picks per inch (PPI), etc.
            Step 4 Step 9
1 Fill the Lifting Plan (Weave Design) For each cell: 1 Save and Export
               • Warp up (1): Fill with black or dark color. • Save your file as .PSD for future editing.
               • Weft up (0): Leave blank or fill with white/light
color. • Export as JPEG, PNG, or PDF for documentation
                                                                       or presentations.
